KEY ISSUES
1. Provide the top 2 reasons why you want to run for school board?

1) The decline in public education over the last several years is unacceptable. I have experiences; recently retired Gifted and Talented teacher, small business owner, and former banker, I bring a wide range of skills to tackle the issues facing facing Mesa Schools.
2). Mesa Schools is experiencing a steep decline in enrollment. I believe this is due to a decline in student achievement, and a lack of parental trust in the district regarding the overall safety of their children. Parents want their children educated, not indoctrinated.

2. Name the top 2 issues with your current school board or district and how you will address each issue.

1). Student achievement: I’d like to see the most effective teachers mentor ineffective teachers, and I’d like to see the methods at our most successful schools duplicated. We need to get back to the basics of education, and increase time spent learning.
2). Parental trust is low across the district, which I believe is another factor of our declining enrollment. I will expect complete transparency with our parents and guardians so that parents are aware of anything that happens with their children while the children are in the care of staff at any one of our schools or any school related activity.

3. Do you support school choice? Why or why not?

Absolutely! Parents know their child and what they may need in the educational space in order for the child to have a solid academic foundation. Our district offers several choice schools which I think is great.
Competition can be good, and improve the public education system if they would simply embrace the concept!

4. Who do you think is the ultimate authority in a child’s education and wellbeing?

The parent or guardian of the child is the ultimate authority, and the schools should have 100% transparency with the parents of any student in their district.

5. Do you agree with the statement “America is inherently racist”? Why or why not?

No, I do not believe America is inherently or systematically racist because I know the progress that has been made over the course of our history.

6. What are your thoughts on “Comprehensive Sex Education”, “Diversity Equity and Inclusion”, and “Social Emotional Learning”? Should these be a part of our public education curriculum or supplemental learning materials or left to parents to teach and why?

None of the curriculum items listed should be in our classrooms. I believe the parent is responsible for the moral, physical, spiritual, and mental development of their children, not the state!

7. With declining academic achievement in reading, writing, math, and science in schools across the nation, how would you address these issues if elected?

Mesa has several schools which have success with student achievement, I would like to see the district look at what those schools are doing and copy the model. As a former Gifted and Talented teacher, I would like to see ‘building thinking skills’ time be expected in every classroom, everyday.
I along with my fellow board members, will have an expectation that everyone in the district have a belief that all students can and will learn. This expectation must be the belief from the top down!
I would like to find the effective teachers in our district and use them as mentors or trainers for our newer teachers.
I have several thoughts, but will end with this, I would increase the time spent learning.

8. Safety is a major concern for most families, how would you support and encourage safety measures for girls in their private spaces, if elected?

Students will be expected to use the facilities that align with their sex at birth. I will pursue a policy being written that states that explicitly. No one group should have special ‘rights’ at the expense of another.

9. Do you believe Title IX is in jeopardy in our public education system today?

Yes, however, with the recent lawsuits and SCOTUS’ ruling in the Chevron Deference or Loper case, I believe it just may be safe. That said, if the DOE’s interpretation stands, I will not comply with that as a board member…
