KEY ISSUES
1. Provide the top 2 reasons why you want to run for school board?

1. To provide an authentic voice at the board for our local districts. Our current Member does not spend time in schools.
2. I want to get politics out of education. I’m looking for sound evidence-based solutions for education.

2. Name the top 2 issues with your current school board or district and how you will address each issue.

1. Attendance-in our District, Attendance is down an average of 10%.. This affects economic proficiency directly. I spoke with one principal who said they’ve tried everything to raise attendance and nothing has worked. Another principal has raised her attendance 33% over the same Time.. We need to get people together to see what’s working and share ideas. Beyond that we need to step up and hold parents accountable for their children being in school chronic absenteeism is a recipe for failure in school.
2. Class size- when us her sons were available, we were able to see that school districts, prioritized class size by hiring more teachers. Now that those funds are gone, classes sizes are going back up. We need to let the legislature know that more funds does equate to better education in this way. Money is not the issue in many circumstances however, in this respect, more funding for teachers would equate to better education by giving teachers a greater ability to reach each child.

3. Do you support school choice? Why or why not?

I do support parents choosing where children go to school. There is a growing number of options parents can choose from and as a parent myself, I support the ability for parents to choose where they choose where their children go to school. People like variety. I also support public education and the ability for our state to provide every child, a good education. Our society has made a contract with the state and expects their tax dollars to be to go towards an excellent education. I think choice only makes all schools better through the lens of a capitalist system. At the same time, if only the most engaged people depart the public education system, This leaves the public education system With fewer engaged parents, which also equates to a lesser education system in the public sphere.

4. Who do you think is the ultimate authority in a child’s education and wellbeing?

I believe the parent is the ultimate authority in a child’s education and well-being.

5. Do you agree with the statement “America is inherently racist”? Why or why not?

No, I do not agree. Some like to look hundreds of years behind and place labels and present day viewpoints on those who’ve gone before us. As a historian myself, this is not appropriate. Furthermore, the founding fathers did what they needed to do to create this great nation we have if they could have done away with slavery in the constitution, they would have. As it was, they would not have had the votes to put it together. Many laws have been put in place to avoid racism. I support those and do not believe that America is inherently racist.

6. What are your thoughts on “Comprehensive Sex Education”, “Diversity Equity and Inclusion”, and “Social Emotional Learning”? Should these be a part of our public education curriculum or supplemental learning materials or left to parents to teach and why?

Sex education is a very controversial subject in our state when it comes to public education. I believe that if someone wants their children taught about sex ed in a comprehensive way, they need to do that at home. That is their right to do. When a subject is controversial I believe public education on should teach what people all agree on rather than interjecting subjects only some support. DEI has not been proven to be effective and I do not support it. Children are not victims nor oppressors in my opinion and should not be taught to believe they are. Social emotional learning goes in lots of different directions and I think we need to be careful about teaching things that go beyond what parents are aware of or want taught. At the same time, of course we all support kindness and acceptance in school. This would be best to be taught at home and I wish we could focus on our academic pursuits because there are so time to teach school day.

7. With declining academic achievement in reading, writing, math, and science in schools across the nation, how would you address these issues if elected?

We need to focus on sound evidence based solutions. Many of the schools in my district are doing very well however, when you go across the state scores drop as wealth drops. I think we continue to place resources in places where they lock resources. In addition, I would support higher pay for teachers who work in more challenging areas rather than equal pay across the state.

8. Safety is a major concern for most families, how would you support and encourage safety measures for girls in their private spaces, if elected?

I support private spaces for girls. I think they want them. I think they like them and I wouldn’t want to go against what girls enjoy. Our safety bill and Utah has provided for a neutral bathroom for those that want a safe space for them and while it may be embarrassing, I think it’s a good compromise.

9. Do you believe Title IX is in jeopardy in our public education system today?

For the law that President Biden tried to put in place I think there is some question as to whether title nine will continue standing intact. However, I’ve been impressed with those who have pushed back and support those measures. We must retain what we gained in the 70s for women. They must be able to compete between themselves- For lots of reasons.

10. Do you have any other endorsements? If so, please list them.

I have three formal endorsements. As an unaffiliated candidate in the education space it is rather difficult to secure endorsements. Our county councilman in Sumit county has formally endorse me. Our city police chief has endorsed me without his police title, and a teacher has her neck out to endorse me formally. If we could talk about people who would love to endorse me, but politically cannot, I would say there are several superintendents, principals, School board presidents and members, nonprofit leaders, and legislators who would relish the opportunity to stand up for me, but politically are unable to do so, I get it. I appreciate it, but it is what it is.
